The Chords To Sweet Home Alabama (Part 1)

Check out my video lesson for how to play the classic “Sweet Home Alabama”. All the chords, strums and riffs are shown and don’t forget to print out the TAB to make the lesson even easier to follow. This is a 2 part lesson, simply login to watch the second part.

Song Information

So this is obviously an all time classic tune for guitar players. As the video shows, you can still get a great sound playing this on acoustic even through the original is played on electric guitar into vintage Marshall amps.

This track dates back to 1974. Two songs that Neil Young wrote (one called “Southern Man” and the other “Alabama”) had some lyrics about the south that rubbed the guys up the wrong way. There are lyrics in “Sweet Home Alabama” that reference Young and those songs in particular…

Well, I heard Mister Young sing about her
Well, I heard ole Neil put her down
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
A Southern man don’t need him around anyhow

Much has been made about this between music journalists (most of it is blown out of proportion).

The track was a 2nd hit for the guys and actually none of the 3 writers of the song were from Alabama. Ronnie Van Zant and Gary Rossington were both born in Jacksonville, Florida. Ed King was from Glendale, California.
