learning how to practice guitar correctly

Simply playing your guitar is not practicing and many people, even those who have been playing for years, still don’t understand what practicing guitar really means or how to do it correctly. It’s a skill you learn how to do just as changing your strings or tuning up. Unfortunately there aren't too many guitar lessons which actually go into the details of how to do it correctly.

Learning how to practice guitar correctly is an essential skill if you wish to break out of beginners guitar and really make some progress.

Whenever the brain tries to learn something new on guitar it’s like pressing the record button on a tape player. If what you play is poorly executed and full of errors then your brain will record it poorly executed and full of errors.

That’s why it’s not enough to simply ‘practice’, you need to PRACTICE PERFECTLY.

So how do we practice perfectly without any mistakes? Well you must slow everything down to a mere crawl and play very, very slowly. This fact is the single most important thing you can do to really make some progress with your guitar playing.

By playing what you are trying to learn very slowly and without mistakes you are giving your brain the perfect performances it needs to record. You should repeat this numerous times so as to securely establish it in your mind. Practicing this way is hard work! It takes a lot of patience but I promise you that spending 10 minutes of your practice time in this way is worth 10 hours of the other stuff.

Irrespective of whether you are a guitar player, pianist, trumpet player, playing oboe or double bass… all good musicians have learned how to practice their respective instruments correctly. Once completed the feeling of playing becomes effortless and second nature. Even when you speed up you’re playing will still remain smooth and error free simply because the quality of your practicing was so good.
